Frankie and Boyd Lee Dunlop

BMHOF Class of 2012

Piano player Boyd Lee Dunlop enjoyed a career resurgence after being "rediscovered" in a Buffalo nursing home at age 85. Boyd started playing the piano at age 9 and was a member of the Colored Musicians Club. Boyd toured with Billie Holiday and gave his younger brother Frankie his first drum lessons. Boyd recorded 2 CDs, "Boyd's Blues" and "The Lake Reflections" before his passing on Friday, December 27, 2013.

Brother Frankie is an influential jazz drummer who recorded with Big Jay McNeely and has played with Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Lionel Hampton, Lena Horne, Charles Mingus and more. Frankie retired in 1984, having played on over 100 albums and spending half a century in the music business. Frankie's Buffalo Shuffle style drumming revolutionized jazz and is still copied and used today by many drummers. Frankie passed away on July 7, 2014.
