Dr. Lonnie Smith

Dr. Lonnie Smith

BMHOF Class of 2009

Dr. Lonnie Smith is an authentic master of the Hammond B3 organ. For over 5 decades Lonnie has furthered the sound of the jazz organ, created a worldwide fan base, and revealed his musical talents on over seventy albums. Today his name is truly synonymous with the instrument he calls the “425 pound beast”. Lonnie convinced Art Kubera, local music store owner and BMHOF Class of 2002, he could play and make a living at it and Art, who Lonnie refers to as his “Angel”, gave Lonnie the Hammond B3 that was sitting in the music store on one condition, Lonnie had to find a way to get it out! Lonnie co-founded the George Benson’s Quartet in 1967 and later signed with Blue Note records. Lonnie recorded and performed with Grover Washington Jr. (BMHOF class of 1999), Dizzy Gillespie, King Curtis, David “Fat Head” Newman and continues to record today.
